| Summer Solstice Sunset '11 - Port Dalhousie, Ontario |
As I write this, there is a downpour occurring outside - rain, thunder, lightning - what timing!
I was in Port Dalhousie, Ontario with a friend, and her son, for the 12th annual Niagara Summer Solstice Event - "Drumming Down the Sun" just a few hours previous, watching the sun go down behind the low lying clouds (photo left).
To see so many people unite and set the atmosphere with the beat of their drums. To watch those not with an instrument dance to those drum beats with hypnotic moves in the sand. I'm no dancer, but even I began swaying to those beats without realizing it. The positive energy was extreme, but even more so where the dance was occurring. Some started dancing around 6:30pm, as we arrived and were still going right up until we left around 9:20pm.
Near the end, as the sun was disappearing below the horizon, the drumming and dancing got even more intense. At sundown, the festivities stopped and everyone clapped and cheered around the whole beach. Then they began to drum and dance right into the evening. Couldn't ask for a better group of people.
There is something to be said about the feeling in the air present at this event. So many coming together to enjoy the longest day of the year. It is the first event of its kind I have attended and definitely not the last. I could feel that togetherness of everyone there. It was a pleasure meeting people I had never met, as well as other friends - whom I was not expecting - and hanging out with my friend and her son who attended the event with me. Everyone was friendly and smiling. Other things added to the atmosphere also. A woman who was smudging those who requested it in passing, the smell of the incense people had burning in the sand, the sound of various instruments - some of which I'd never seen, all added to that ambiance and positive energy this evening.
What a beautiful way to end this day.
